Hello Group,
Could someone please tell me if the name Lino is a short form or nickname
for another name. Thanks so much.

Lina: Adelina, Carolina, Catalina, Marcelina, Ursulina, etc.

Lino: Avelino, Paulino, Marcelino, etc.

Thanks so much for your help.
I just wasn't sure if it was a nickname or not,
as it was used in official documents in the 1700's.

El nombre Lino existe desde la antigüedad, se refiere al San Lino , Segundo Papa de Roma.

Yes, Alice. Lino can be a name by itself. Generally nicknames aren't used in church records.

Hi Rosa,
That makes so much sense, especially in the 1700's.
Just wanted to consult my group expertise, before I
came to any definitive conclusion!

Existió una costumbre, especialmente en el siglo XIX, de que el cura elegía el nombre del niño y le ponían el nombre del santo que se conmemoraba el día del bautizo. Por ejemplo si un niño o niña se llamaba María Dolores o José Dolores probablemente fue bautizado el día Viernes de Dolores, una semana antes de la pascua.

Se puede consultar cualquier "santoral" en línea.

El día que se recuerda a San Lino, papa mártir es el 23 de septiembre.
